Six Signs Your Sewer Line Is Failing

The lateral is the pipe nobody thinks about

Your sewer lateral runs from the house, under the yard, to the connection at the public main. In most Prince William County jurisdictions the homeowner owns that entire run, including the section under the front lawn, and it is the most expensive single pipe on the property.

It also gives plenty of warning before it fails outright. Here is what to watch for.

1. Multiple fixtures backing up at the same time

A single slow sink is a branch-line clog. A tub, a toilet, and a laundry drain all struggling together means the problem is downstream of all of them — in the main line.

The lowest fixture in the house shows it first, which is why basement floor drains and basement showers are usually the early warning.

2. Gurgling when another fixture drains

If flushing a toilet makes a tub gurgle, or running the washing machine makes a toilet bubble, air is being displaced through the wrong path because the main line is restricted. Healthy drainage is quiet.

3. Sewer odor indoors or in the yard

A properly functioning drain system is sealed by water in each fixture trap and vented through the roof. Persistent sewer smell means either a dry trap, a venting problem, or a break in the line allowing gas to escape.

Smell in the yard, particularly along a line between the house and the street, is a strong indicator of a cracked or separated lateral.

4. Lush green stripes or sunken ground in the lawn

A leaking sewer lateral fertilizes the soil above it. A strip of grass noticeably greener and faster-growing than the rest of the lawn, following a straight line toward the street, is one of the most reliable outdoor signs.

The opposite sign matters too: a depression or soft spot means soil is washing into a break and the ground above is settling.

5. The same main-line clog, over and over

If the main line has been cabled twice in a year, cabling is not solving the problem. Something structural is catching debris — a root mass at a joint, an offset where two sections have shifted, or a belly holding standing water.

This is the point to stop paying for repeat clearings and put a camera down the line. The footage either shows a clean pipe with a grease problem, which jetting solves, or it shows a defect, which cleaning never will.

6. Sudden pest or rodent activity

Rodents travel sewer lines, and a break in the lateral gives them a route to the crawlspace or basement. An unexplained new rodent problem alongside any of the drainage symptoms above is worth taking seriously as a plumbing signal, not only a pest one.

What actually causes lateral failure around here

• Root intrusion at joints in clay and cast-iron laterals, common in older Dale City, Dumfries, Occoquan and Manassas neighborhoods with mature street trees
• Cast-iron corrosion from the inside, thinning the bottom of horizontal runs until it perforates
• Settlement creating a low spot, or belly, where waste and water stand instead of flowing
• Ground movement from nearby construction or heavy vehicle loading over shallow runs
• Grease accumulation gradually reducing the effective diameter over years
